Reid Stevenson, a third generation Missoulian and has always been artistically inclined. An enthusiastic participant in the performing arts all through elementary school, high school, and college, but only briefly dabbled in the visual arts in elementary school and high school. He only recently decided to focus on the visual arts when he moved to Hawaii in early 2010.
Reid had visited the island several times over the years to see his uncle, Gary Wagner, a prominent artist based outside Wiamea, Hawaii, who was a master of sand etching/carving. It was his uncle who inspired him to learn the trade.
Unfortunately Gary passed on before Reid could get back over to the island. Not to be deterred he delved into his uncle Gary’s old projects and taught himself how to cut and apply the vinyl resist and the rudiments of sand carving. On his return to Missoula, Reid set up shop and continues to practice etching and carving of Glass, Stone and Wood. He has his work on display at Studio D throughout the week and at the Higgins Lot Market on the corner of Higgins Avenue, and Pine Street in Downtown Missoula on Saturdays between May-October.
