What Is Pilates?

Pilates was designed by Joseph Pilates, it was originally names “Contrology.” He designed a system of exercises during the First World War with the proposal to improve the rehabilitation program for the many returning veterans. Joseph Pilates believed that mental and physical health are inter-related.   Joseph Pilates developed a series of exercises on the mat , and other various equipment, which he invented to strengthen the center, lengthen the spine, increase body awareness, build muscle tone and gain flexibility. The Pilates technique develops strong abdominal & postural muscles to support the skeletal system and act as the "powerhouse" of the body.  This is achieved by using the eight principles of Pilates: control, breath, flowing movement, precision, centering, stability, range of motion, and opposition.
